National Parks - Canada

Canada’s national parks are known for their wide-open spaces and quieter, less crowded feel. Managed by Parks Canada, they range from the Rocky Mountain parks like Banff National Park and Jasper National Park to coastal landscapes like Gros Morne National Park. If you’re looking for longer drives, big scenery, and fewer crowds, Canada’s parks are great!

National Parks - Mexico

Mexico’s national parks bring together nature, history, and culture in a way that feels different from the U.S. and Canada. Protected by the National Commission of Natural Protected Areas, they include places like Pico de Orizaba National Park, Arrecifes de Cozumel National Park, and Cumbres de Monterrey National Park. These parks often combine outdoor experiences with strong local culture, making them especially rewarding to explore.

National Parks - USA

The United States’ national parks cover a wide range of landscapes, from mountains and deserts to forests and coastlines. Managed by the National Park Service, these parks include well-known places like Yellowstone National Park, Yosemite National Park, and Grand Canyon National Park. Whether you’re on a long road trip or a quick weekend visit, they offer easy access to some of the country’s most memorable scenery.

Golden Gate Bridge at Dusk

Bridge Exploration

A bridge is a feat of engineering and human ambition that captures the imagination. Every bridge changes the perspective on the landscapes it links, reflecting the aspiration and ingenuity of the people who built it.

Lighthouse in the Dark

Lighthouse Experiences

Lighthouses stir the imagination as they stand guard over coastlines and capes, facing wind, waves, and time. We explore not just their architecture and setting, but the sense of place and wonder they continue to inspire.

A walk among crystal clear lakes in Plitvice. Pretty neat if you have good weather…also bad for photos, because you have people everywhere

Waterfall Adventures

Few sights rival the raw beauty of a waterfall, as its sound echoes through the landscape. Each one is shaped by the terrain and the seasons, from gentle woodland cascades to dramatic heights.

Forest Trails

Forest trails invite a slower pace, as the trail winds through shaded canopies and quiet landscapes, allowing one to reflect on the sense of connection they bring.

Wildlife Viewing

Wildlife viewing turns an ordinary outing into a moment of discovery. Spotting animals in their natural surroundings brings a sense of wonder and a deeper appreciation for the wild places they call home.

I was struck by the incredible beauty of the Swiss Alps in the region between Rougemont and Gstaad. The combination of green pastures and rugged mountains is unique. It gives us a feeling of protection and brings serenity.

Mountain Vistas

Mountain vistas reveal nature at its grandest, where peaks stretch toward the sky and valleys fade into the horizon, offering a quiet reminder of the vast and awe-inspiring natural world we live in.

Scenic Byways

Scenic byways transform an ordinary drive into a journey worth remembering, as the road winds through mountains, forests, coastlines, and small towns at an unhurried pace.

Historic Routes

Historic highways follow routes that once carried explorers, traders, and dreamers. Each mile reveals traces of the past—old bridges, vintage signs, and timeless towns—reminding us how history still lives along the open road.

Local Cuisine

The best food usually isn’t fancy—it’s the spots locals go back to again and again that tell you a little more about where you are. The ones we stumble across are often the most memorable.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, a diesel engine has advantages over a gasoline engine, especially in terms of torque. However, for us, the advantages of a gasoline engine outweigh those of a diesel engine, primarily the lower upfront cost, lower maintenance costs, and higher payload capacity. During remote travel, gasoline and repair facilities being readily available are an advantage. The smoother acceleration and quieter operation are also appealing. As for the touted fuel economy, the breakeven point for fuel consumption is too far in the future to provide a benefit for us. The 6.46.4L HEMI® V8 is a robust gasoline engine capable of hauling the truck camper. Of course, that's our opinion, which may be wrong, but we like to think we are right.

Choosing a 4x4 truck turned out to be the toughest decision because it added several thousand dollars to the price. It also meant worse gas mileage, less payload capacity, and higher maintenance costs. The big question was whether it would actually get used enough to make all of that worth it.  In the end, thinking about backroad travel and off-grid camping we would be doing, made it feel worth it for peace of mind, and made the downsides easier to accept.
